My third trimester was packed with a lot of excitement, and I still can’t get over all of the love and gifts that were showered on my son during this time in my pregnancy. Mr. Blakes Jr was definitely more active during those last weeks, and we did a lot of bonding while he was in the womb. I almost didn’t want it to end!

You can read about my first trimester here, and my second trimester here to get all caught up. For the most part, I enjoyed my third trimester but there were a few things that I didn’t expect.

Black couple, husband and pregnant wife, third trimester, pregnancy, the bump
  1. Gestational Diabetes. Early in my pregnancy, my OB/GYN had me take the 1-hour and 3-hour glucose tests which I passed. When I retested at 28 weeks, I was disappointed that I failed the 3 hour test miserably. I mean, they didn’t even make me stay for the whole 3 hours because my glucose levels just were not lowering as they should. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and referred to a maternal-fetal medicine practice to monitor my glucose levels until delivery. That meant a strict diet and finger sticks 4 times a day, so none of that pregnancy ‘eating whatever you want’ and it sucked!
  2. No swelling or nose spreading. Surprisingly I didn’t experience any swelling in my legs and feet until after the baby was born, nor did I show my pregnancy in my face. So many people made mention of this that I wanted to include it on this list. I was under the impression that this is automatic but turns out some women never experience these common symptoms.
  3. Not anxious to meet baby. Many women get super anxious to meet their baby as the third trimester comes to a close. I did not. Of course I knew that my baby was coming soon, but I honestly was content with being pregnant. I knew exactly where he was, he was quiet, and he didn’t need his diaper changed – and I kinda liked that LOL. Plus, I had a few 3D ultrasounds so I had an idea of what he looked like already so I was content to wait it out.
  4. High blood pressure. Throughout my pregnancy, my blood pressure was always within normal range. I maintained a healthy diet and exercise routine, especially once I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I was surprised when I went in for my 36 week check up to have a high blood pressure reading. At that moment, I didn’t think anything of it especially since there was no protein in my urine (a sign of preeclampsia). But I was wrong…
  5. Preterm labor and delivery. That high blood pressure landed me in the hospital unexpectedly at 36 weeks, and being told that I had to deliver my baby. The debate is still out on whether that was absolutely true or not, but I went with what the physician said at the time. Unfortunately, because of the medications I was given there was no turning back. After almost 4 days, and 2 different hospitals, we welcomed our son. Definitely not how I imagined my birth experience to be, but all is well that ends well.

I truly miss being pregnant, and my baby bump, but I am loving this little guy way more.
