As a 4 month old new mom, life is moving fast and I’m just trying to enjoy the moments as they slip away. Working full time, blogging full time, and mumming full time is challenging, and often times we forget to take care of ourselves. Even simple things like drinking plenty of water are hard to keep up with.

Its so important for new moms to drink more water, and here are three reasons why.

#1: Your body is still recovering. Long after your 6 week postpartum checkup, your body is still recovering from pregnancy, labor, and delivery. If you had an ‘eventful’ labor like I did, it may take even longer. Drinking plenty of water is the most basic thing that helps our body renew itself.

#2: You need more energy. Newborns tend to not know what time of the day it is, which can limit the amount of sleep you get as a new mom. Entertaining family and friends, trying to keep up with choirs, or going back to work can all tap into your energy. Mild dehydration (fluid loss of 1-3%) can impair energy levels and mood. So drinking more water helps ensure your energy levels stay up.

#3: You need more focus. Drinking water helps to improve your focus. Any new mom will tell you that if you thought pregnancy brain was bad, it doesn’t compare to new mom brain. Its difficult to remember things, and there are so many things to keep up with. Water helps your brain think faster.

Bonus: Breastfeeding moms need to stay hydrated. Experts recommend you drink ½ to ¾ of an ounce of water per pound that you weigh when you aren’t nursing. This ensures you’re hydrated enough to produce the right amount of breast milk and also stay properly hydrated for your own health!

Drinking water has many health benefits for all, like keeping you hydrated, improving your focus, and increasing your energy. But for new moms, these are especially important. Water is the best way to stay hydrated, but there’s also sparkling water, unsweetened teas, and fruit-infused water.
