This past Saturday I was a model for The Prissy Tomboy, an new online vintage boutique owned by my graphic designer Patty Boone. Not only did I get to play dress up, I also got my makeup done by VA-based makeup artist Jasmine Hines. Jasmine has been working her artistry for 3 years, and has beat the faces of comedian Som’more and reality tv stars like Rasheeda, Karlie Redd, Tracy Steele (Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta), and Dutchess (Black Ink Crew). I’d heard about Jasmine’s work, so I was excited to experience her work.
I noticed there were several pairs of false lashes at her station, so I knew I’d have to get the 411 because I’ve never worn them before. I’m a false lash virgin! My apprehension to wearing them has been that they would be too dramatic, or that I would apply them incorrectly. So as Jasmine applied the lashes, I asked her to share some tips that I could bring to the Naturally Glam Fam. She was happy to oblige! Here are her 8 tips for applying false lashes simple enough for a newbie:
1. Be patient. It may take a few tries before you feel like a pro so take your time.
2. Use a hand mirror. Looking down into a hand-held mirror makes for a better view.
3. Measure twice; cut once. Put the flash lash up to your lashes to check for fit and cut as needed.
4. Be tachy. Let the glue dry slightly and get tachy before applying to your lash line.
5. Get close. Stick the false lash band as close to your lash line as possible.
6. Glue first. Another option is to paint the glue onto the lash line and then apply the false lashes.
7. Get married. Use your mascara to marry your natural lashes with the false lashes.
8. Skinny is in. The skinnier the band is, the better for a natural look and ease of application.
This is my makeup look after Jasmine was done. The lashes I had one were photo-shoot dramatic for sure. My final thought on false lashes is that I definitely wouldn’t wear them regularly, but I would give very natural falsies a go for special occasions when I want my eyes to pop.
