MJE4How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for five years, my last relaxer was in 2008.

What made you decide to go natural (or stay natural if you never relaxed your hair)?
I consider myself an “Accidental Natural”. My husband was deployed, I was working a full-time job, pursuing my Bachelor’s degree and I had a 2 yr-old. I started wearing sew-ins purely out of convenience and just kept getting them so I wouldn’t have to do my hair.

Big Chop, shot term transition or long term transition? Why?
The sew-ins allowed me to do a long tem transition, my stylist tried convincing me to wear my hair out for a few months and I was against it. She straightened a piece of hair at the nape of my neck and it reached my armpit. Over the course of 3 years I had no idea how long my hair had grown.

What is your hair care routine/regimen?
I am a fan of protective styling. In between braids with extensions I do about a month of twist-out/braid-out styles, and I like wearing mini twist updos as well.

What are your top 5 ‘must-have’ hair care products/items? Why?
I recently relocated from Georgia to Arizona, so my must haves are anything that adds moisture these days. Coconut oil and/or avocado oil for pre-poos, JBCO for sealing and scalp massages and aloe vera juice in my daily moisture spray. I also use henna monthly for strengthening my hair

What are your favorite styles to wear?
I still opt for convenience, so I wear braids or twists often.

What is one thing you wish you knew about your hair or about your journey before going natural?
I wish I knew my hair was this awesome!

What is the most important tip you’ve learned throughout your natural hair journey that you think every natural should know?
The most important thing to know/remember is that this relationship with our fabulously curly, coily, kinky hair is that it takes time to mature. For so many of us, we’ve spent more years with chemicals in our hair than without so we should give ourselves the time to learn our texture and what makes her “glow”.

What are thoughts on the natural hair community/movement?
I love it. As much as I wish it wasn’t a “movement”, and that there were more of us embracing our texture from the very beginning, I understand that the journey was necessary to get here. There are many shared testimonies of how this path has changed mindsets and helped women live healthier, more enlightened lives. Those lessons make the journey worth it.
