Growing up, I always wanted to have a dog. But because the dog my parents had was killed when I was a baby, my mom never wanted to get another dog. When I finally got married and we purchased our first home, the first order of business was to get a dog. Next thing I knew, we had 3 dogs. They really brought so much energy to the house, and were always up to something that would have us laughing. When we had to downsize our living space, we found new homes for our larger dogs (I still miss Sticks and Sparkle *thug tears*) and kept the smallest dog – our Shih-Tzu named NuNu.
NuNu is 8 years old, and though she is little – her personality is larger than life. So much so, we created an Instagram account for her @nunutheshihtzu and gave her the hashtag #everybodyknowsnunu for obvious reasons. She has not only brought a lot of good vibes to our household, but to everyone who spends time with her. She is sorta a therapy dog for family and friends. She loves to cuddle up, and the toughest of men have talked gibberish to NuNu while petting her. She just has that calming effect on people.
As you can see, dogs can have a positive effect on your overall health. They can also be trained to recognize the onset of health issues, which is so dope. And sometimes when I’m home alone, I don’t feel as lonely because NuNu is right there to keep me company. If you’re considering adding a Shih-Tzu to your family, here are some things to know about the breed that we love so much.
This definitely describes NuNu, which makes her a perfect fit for our family. She’s about 9 lbs, and does not shed, which makes her great for apartment living. She also has very little exercise requirements, which is great for us because we are busy and don’t have a lot of time to take a dog on long walks.
If you’re a dog lover, have you experienced any of these benefits of having a dog?
This was such an inspiring read. I love dogs and now I want one all the more. I think I might get two, a Husky and a Maltipoo!
I love the idea of a dog but know that realistically having a dog would be like having another child. I will enjoy my sweet, but grumpy, kitty.
Great Read…and a lot of information that I didn’t know! Now I see why they recommend older people to get dogs because they truly keep them company!
I am not a dog lover but I find this post to be pretty interesting. It give me some things to think about. Thanks for sharing
My kids want a dog so bad. I am not a dog lover but I know dogs definitely bring a happiness to a household.
Nunu is such a rock star, I love that she chills so hard. We had dogs growing up but I don’t remember them. When we move I think we are going to get a dog. I’m excited and nervous, I don’t know much of anything about dogs.
Aw, this makes me miss my little pug. I loved having him around but the family ended up being allergic and we had to give him up. SOmetimes he was a great comforter to me.
Even though I had a dog, I am not really a fan of them. It is cool that they do have added health benefits. But parts of me can’t get over that they are like babies that never get old. That’s what keeps me from getting another one.
I’m not a dog fan but I think your dog is cute. I didn’t realize they had so many health benefits related to your health, mind, and body. I can def see how dogs could keep you company.
I absolutely love dogs! We had a border collie/black lab mix growing up named Jasmine. She was the smartest, most wonderful dog ever. When she died, it was so painful and left a huge hole in our family. My dad didn’t speak to anyone for a week, he was so devastated.
I love Shih tzus because they are such a good dogs! Loyal, fun, obedient, they are perfect. I also love that they are hypoallergenic and small. It would be the first breed I get once I get my husband on board with adopting!!
This is very inspiring, I am not really into dogs but I have lots of dog lover friends. thank you for sharing
