Smoothies are a staple in my weekly diet, and I love sharing my favorite recipes here on Naturally Glam. Most of the smoothies I see, even at the major smoothie restaurants, use tropical or summer fruits like pineapples, bananas, and strawberries. But it’s Fall, so I wanted to create a smoothie that was inspired by the season. I recently purchased a pumpkin apple harvest fragrance candle, and that inspired me to come up with a pumpkin smoothie recipe. This is the perfect pumpkin smoothie for fall. Pumpkin-Smoothie_4

I love using almond milk in all of my smoothies. Since Mr. Blakes is lactose intolerant, I’ve been using dairy-free milk alternatives for years. Soy milk used to be the only option easily found in stores, but almond milk has become readily available in the last few years as is our go-to. One thing about most leading almond milk brands is that they are low in protein. Walmart now carries the Orgain Organic Protein Almond Milk®, which is vegan, dairy free, gluten free, soy free, non-GMO, and organic. It contains 10 times the protein of other leading almond milks, and is a plant based source of calcium and vitamin D. Pumpkin-Smoothie_1

I picked some up right in my local Norfolk Walmart store to try along with the other ingredients in this recipe. They have two vanilla varieties, unsweetened and lightly sweetened vanilla, so I purchased both because Mr. Blakes prefers sweetened almond milk. Orgain’s lightly sweetened vanilla has less than half of the sugar of the leading brands’ sweetened vanilla almond milk. That’s what I’ll be using in this Pumpkin Apple Harvest recipe.AlmondMilk-InfoGraphic-Walmartv2

What’s In the Pumpkin Apple Harvest Smoothie?

  • 1 cup Orgain Organic Protein Almond Milk®
  • 1/4 cup steel cut oats
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 cup diced apple, frozen
  • 1/2 cup diced pear, frozen
  • 1/2 cup pear nectar
  • 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Pumpkin-Smoothie_9 Pumpkin-Smoothie_6How Do You Make It?

  1. Add the steel cut oats to the blender (I’m using a Nutribullet). Blend for a few seconds to get the oats to a finer consistency.
  2. Add all of the other ingredients, and blend to the consistency that you like. This smoothie is very thick, so if you like a thinner drink, add more liquid.
  3. Pour and serve. Sprinkle with a little cinnamon, or add a cinnamon stick for some added fanciness.

Pumpkin-Smoothie_5Pumpkin is very nutrient dense food, squeezing lots of vitamins and minerals into less calories. Pumpkin is one of the best-known sources of beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant. Apples are a great source of fiber, and the phytonutrients and antioxidants in apples may help reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. Pears are also a good source of fiber. Pears are higher in pectin, a water soluble fiber, than apples, and are a good source of vitamin B2, C, E, copper, and potassium. Not only is the smoothie protein packed thanks to Orgain Organic Protein Almond Milk®, but the pumpkin, apple and pear make it even more so a smoothie you can feel good about. Mr. Blakes really enjoyed this Pumpkin Apple Harvest smoothie after his strength training workout at the gym, using the protein and antioxidants to help build and repair his muscles.
