Over the course of the last 6 or 7 years of blogging, I’ve seen so many blogs come and go. You’d be surprised how often I run into someone who’s blog I used to follow who no longer uploads blog posts or videos, and is hardly ever on social media. Or maybe you are here because you aren’t that surprised at all. You are close to quitting your blog because you’re experiencing blogging burnout.
Blogging Burnout
I haven’t seriously considered quitting this blog, even thought I’ve had some battles with blogging burnout. My most recent bout was last year at the Blogalicious blogging conference. Yup, I was at a blogging conference in the midst of a major blogging burnout. It actually turned out to be just the fix I needed in 3 ways. These are three ways that you can also overcome blogging burnout without quitting your blog altogether.

Connect With Your Blogging Tribe

In my blogging eCourse, I encourage bloggers to build a tribe of their blogging colleagues. We all know that the back end of blogging is still misunderstood by non-bloggers. Some people really don’t know what a blog is, and those that do really don’t understand the work and sacrifice it takes to be a content creator. They may not understand how it relates to your purpose, so when you get overwhelmed, they may encourage you to keep going. They may even discourage you from continuing ‘that blogging thing’. So the support of others who totally understand what you’re going through is priceless. Not only can they keep you encouraged, but they may also be able to share tips that they’ve applied when they experienced blogging burnout that might be the solution to your issue. The good news is you can connect with your blogging tribe online, maybe by joining a virtual blogging group based on the area where you live or your niche, which makes it really easy.

Take a Moment to Take a Moment

The #bloggergrind is real, especially if you have a hustler’s spirit like myself. I tend put my head down and work work work work work *queue Rihanna* and before I know it I’m totally consumed. If something has to get done, it has to get done, whether than means I get less sleep, don’t eat, or don’t go out. Sometimes I’m so focused I find myself holding my breath. Your girl goes hard, which is a one way ticket to blogging burnout. When I saw there was a Yoga & Self-Care workshop at Blogalicious, I knew that I needed to get there because I rarely (read NEVER) take time for myself. And there was my breakthrough. That workshop forced me to take a moment to take a moment. To sit still and not do. Just breath and quiet my mind, and deal with the thought that were still so loud. Because that was the thought that needed my attention. Now, I make a point to take a moment each week to do just what I did at that workshop. I encourage you to do the same. You don’t need to quit – you probably just need to take a moment to take a moment.

Refresh Your Goals

Think about the purpose of the refresh (or reload) button on your web browser. When you hit that button on a web page, either the page is going to refresh and the same things will be there, or the page is gong to refresh and there will be some changes. The same thing can be with your blog or brand. When you are feeling blogging burnout, you really need to just hit the refresh button on your brand. Make sure it is still your passion, and helps you live your purpose. Be open to making some changes. Maybe you don’t enjoy writing as much as you thought – can you instead make video content or create a podcast? Did you start your blog talking about hair, but your real passion is DIY crafts and home goods? Creating content you don’t really enjoy, in a way you don’t enjoy, will get you a seat at the blogging burnout table. Refresh, and make some changes that better suit where you are right now.

For some, being a content creator just isn’t what they are passionate about, and it is not tied to their purpose. If that’s you, then blogging probably isn’t for you and you should quit while you’re ahead. But if your are passionate about creating content to sharing stories, inspiration, and information with others, than blogging is a great way to fulfill your purpose. Don’t give up so soon when you experience blogging burnout. Connect with your blogging tribe, take a moment to take a moment, and refresh your goals.

Have you experienced blogging burnout before? What did you do to get beyond it? I’d love to for your to share.
