How long have you been natural?
I’ve been natural for 2 and a half years.

What made you decide to go natural?
First off, I’d like to Thank You for interviewing me! When I decided to go natural, it was after a dreadful relaxer experience. I’ll never forget looking at my hair, and seeing just how much hair that I actually had left on my head (which was absolutely none) and thinking “How did this happen”. After chopping it in May of 2010, I felt amazing! I immediately felt a sense of an unexplainable relief. I’ve been learning new things everyday about my hair. And I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Big Chop, shot term transition or long term transition? Why?
Big Chop. I Big Chopped because I didn’t know what “Transitioning” was at the time. I didn’t even know what a “Big Chop” was at the time. All I knew was that I had just chopped off my hair, and what do I do now? LOL. I didn’t know about the “Natural Hair Forums” and websites, or the “Youtube Gurus”. So I had to learn how to properly take care of my hair, with trial and error!

What are your top 5 ‘must-have’ hair care products/items? Why?
Giovanni “Direct Leave In”, because it has a lot of slip and it allows my hair to stay so soft, no matter what hair style I’d like to achieve.
Paul Mitchell “The Conditioner”. This leave in also has a great slip, and it’s wonderful when I want to do a great deal of detangling.
Shea Moisture “Curl Enhancing Smoothie”. I love this product because it’s simple amazing with helping my hair stay hydrated during the week. It also gives great hold without the hard effects of gel.
Nubian Heritage “EVOO and Moringa”. I love this product because a little really does go a very long way. It’s super moisturizing and it smells great!
Carol’s Daughter “Healthy Hair Butter”. I was skeptical when I first decided to use this product, but I decided to try it, and I LOVE it! The smell is a light citrus, and it’s very thick for the dry seasons!

What are your favorite styles to wear?
I love to wear my “Curly Fro” with a side part, which I believe is my go to style!

What is one thing you wish you knew about your hair or about your journey before going natural?
I wish I knew that I couldn’t straighten my hair everyday. I never knew about heat damage. It was the worst thing for me! I had to do a mini chop after going natural, and being a year in. I’ve vowed to not straighten my hair so much again!

What is the most important tip you’ve learned through out your natural hair journey that you think every natural should know?
The most important tip I’ve learned is The LOC Method – locking in the moisture. My hair used to be really dry before hand. But ever since I learned how to keep the moisture in my hair, my ends have less shedding (which is always great)!

What are thoughts on the natural hair community/movement?
I’m really excited to see so many naturals supporting each other. Women in society aren’t always as supportive towards each other as I truly believe they should be. I’ve seen people change their whole life after becoming natural. It’s a community of love and compassion. I’m proud to say that I am a part of a growing community that I inspire, and that I also become inspired by every day.
