ingredients for a green smoothie inside the nutribullet container

While hanging out with fellow blogger Monet of CurlsandMo.com, she turned me on to the beauty that is the NutriBullet, and adding uncooked oats to green smoothies. First of all, let me just say that I did not know you could even eat raw oats. Please tell me I am not alone.  Second of all, my wonderful ‘day job’ boss purchased a NutriBullet for me as a ‘end of the year’ bribe, I mean gift. It’s amazing, and I want to make smoothies all day long. Healthy, green smoothies. Okay, okay – frozen margaritas too on occasion.

I decided one day to see what all could fit into one smoothie and still come out, well, smooth – and out came this recipe. While I love sautéed kale, or even kale chips, raw kale in green smoothies tends to leave a bitter taste. I opted to try this baby kale and spinach mix I found at Walmart, since baby kale has lots of the nutritional value without so much of the bitterness. Steel cut oats are basically oats that are a few steps away from being rolled oats, which is what you commonly see. They add some thickness as well as a nutty flavor. Chia seeds are not only high in omega-3 fatty acids, but they also swell, which add more thickness.  All that thickness equals a smoothie that leaves you feeling fuller longer. This smoothie is packed with protein, carbs, and fiber – making it perfect for breakfast on the run or before and after a workout.

What do you add to your green smoothies to make them spectacular?
