I found this long string of large pearls at my fav thrift store for 99 cents. SCORE!  I doubled them up for this look.

Makeup Look of the Day – Smokey

After attending the makeup workshop last night, I was excited to get up this morning and use of the tips I learned.  When I got off the elevator this morning at work, my coworker said “Oh Jonna, you look smokey”.  Normally that might be a bad thing, but this time it was a good thing.  Please ignor my eczema in these pics – just focus on the eyes LOL.

Here is the deep grey shade I used on my lid…

image

This is the soft brown shade I used to blend in the lid color into my crease to decrease a harse line (tip I learned at the workshop)

This is the shade I used to highlight my brow and tear ducts.

All of these are shadows included in this e.l.f. Beauty Book.  I’ll be using this bad boy daily!

I stepped out on faith after last night’s workshop, and used a liquid eyeliner by e.l.f. instead of a pencil like I normally do.  OMG!!!  It changed my life…I will never be the same again LOL.  But seriously, I was so nervous about using liquid liner – I’ve had these for probably a year and never even opened them.  What a mistake.  Using the liquid liner was 10 times easier to use than a pencil.

Then I did a light pink on the lip with this MAC lip glass.

I got nothing but complements today on my makeup look :o )

Out & About – ODU Fashion Assoc. Makeup Workshop

Just last week, I came across a tweet from the Fashion Association at ODU (@FashionAssocODU on Twitter) about a free makeup workshop featuring local MUA Nita (@Nita2Nyce on Twitter).  Since I’m a self-proclaimed makeup novice who wants to step up my game (I’m in my 30s for crying out loud LOL), I definitely wanted to attend.

However, when Monday rolled around, I felt horrible.  But something told me to get up and go anyway, and I’m so glad that I did.  Ms Nita is not only a well-known MUA, she is also the brains behind Glam Metish Magazine at www.glamfetishmag.com.  And she is SUPER down to earth.  She’s from Bad News (Newport News, VA for my non-757 subbies) which is my hometown – so I knew I was in for a treat.  She was very open to answering any and all questions, and kept it real with her answers.  I learned so much!

Below are some pics as she does a day-time look on her intern.  I loved how she was able to do a low-key smokey eye that was appropriate for day.  And believe it or not, she used all drug store brands to do this look.  Wet-n-Wild for the eye shadow, Revlon Colorstay for the foundation, Loreal mascara, blush from a beauty supply store - all things you can find at any drug store for under $10.

Next, she picked an attendee from the audience who never wears makeup, and completely glammed her up.  I’m talking purple shadow to falsies – she was set to hit the club.  Too bad it was a Monday LOL

Doesn’t she look gorg?!?!  I love that she looks flawless, but not like she has a mask on.  And look at her hair – love her locs!

So what did I learn?  Well here are just a few of the Do’s & Dont’s I picked up:

  • Do use all different brands of cosmetics.  There is no one brand that has it all.
  • Do try trusted drug store brands. You can find things that work for your every day use.
  • Do experiment with colors.  If you feel comfy rocking it, then rock it. No limits!
  • Do use liquid eye liner.
  • Do use bronzer for a nice glow.
  • Do find good, quality brushes to apply your makeup with.
  • Don’t just apply blush right on the apple of your cheeks - BLEND BOO BOO!
  • Don’t use track glue or cheap glue for false lashes. You run the risk of infection.
  • Don’t use makeup that’s too far past the expiration. You run the risk of infection.
  • Don’t use a concealer more than 2 shades lighter than you are.
  • Don’t use foundation or makeup with talc as one of the ingredients. It can give a grey or white look to your face, especially in pictures because it reflects the flash.

My Style-My Look: Golden Anniversary

The hubster and I were invited to a 50th wedding anniversary party last night. I wasn’t quite sure what to wear as “semi formal” attire always confuses me. What does that REALLY mean?!?!  Anyhow…I kept it simple with one of my fav black dresses and gold accessories since it was a golden anniversary.  Get it, 50 years…golden anniversary…golden accessories…LOL

image

This smokey eye was courtesy of e.l.f. cosmetics.  I love their Beauty Books – they are just the thing for makeup novices like myself. I got this one – the Smokey Eye edition – from Ross for $4.

Here are the shadows from this palate that I used to create this look.  The black on the left for the lid, shimmery brown on the right for the crease. cream in the middle for highlight.  The shadows aren’t really organized in any way, but it worked out that these were all in a row together.

I kept the lips neutral with this Maybelline mineral lipstick in Chestnut that I picked up at the Dollar Tree.  I added Almay Naturals lip gloss in Nude over the lipstick to give a little shine.

image

I felt very Kim K with this look…but Kim K on a budget.  Gotta love that!  The hair is just a dry twist-out using Karen’s Body Beautiful hair nectar and coconut oil.

This cocktail ring came from Forever21, and the earrings and bracelet came from The $1 DollarJewelry store on Facebook. image

The shoes I got from a Newport News catalog warehouse sale for $2.  Surprisingly enough, though these are really high – they are super comfy.  I kept them on all night.

And the dress is by Calvin Klein. I found this at Ross for $13 on clearance.  What I love about this dress (even though you can’t see it in these pics) is that it looks like a halter from the front, but my back is completely covered.  It also has pads in the boob area, so you don’t need to wear a bra.  It does dip a little low in the front, so I just grabbed my black Cami Secret (love these, they sell them at Walmart – 3 colors for $10) and pinned it in place to cover up the cleav.

And here is the hubster.  He dresses himself, so I can’t tell you anything about this outfit except that he paid $10 for this tie.  I only know that because he went out and bought it at 6:00pm (the party started at 7:00pm).  But he still looks handsome to me!

We had a great night with our friends.  Its not everyday that you get to celebrate a couple’s 50th wedding anniversary.  My parents still have 14 years to go…I guess I should start saving up now LOL
