Good Food – Healthy Bacon Sandwich

So you think you can’t have bacon anymore once you are striving to live a healthier lifestyle? WRONG!

Unless you choose a meat-free diet, turkey bacon can save the day.  I’ve been eating turkey bacon since Hubby and I started dating because he is anti-swine (but not for religious reasons so I’ve gotten him to eat lean cuts of pork in the past). I’ve tried all the brands found in most grocery store chains, but they all have the same problem. They are filled with sodium (which is the real culprit in pork bacon) and shrink to almost half their pre-cooked size. BUMMER!

I direct your attention to your local Trader Joe’s for the best turkey bacon on earth. I’m not kidding.  Their uncured turkey bacon is The BUSINESS! It hardly shrinks when cooked, and at 30 calories and 1.5 grams of fat per slice, its a great find.

This bacon sandwich was made with Trader Joe’s uncured turkey bacon and Nature’s Own Double Fiber wheat bread (only 50 calories per slice!).  Total calories for this sandwich: 160! SCORE!

Out & About – Geisha Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar

Groupon.com has been good to me yet another time. This time it lead me to Geisha – a new hibachi/sushi spot in the Greenbriar area of Chesapeake, VA.  I had been wanting to try it, but there’s no motivation like $30 worth of food for $15!

Hubby and I had a great time and the rolls were tasty! Basic rolls ranged from $3.50-$7, with pricier specialty rolls for $13.99. We ordered 5 basic rolls, hubby had a couple beers and I had a Lotus Flower martini. Our total would have been $45, but with the Groupon we saved $15.  Gotta love that!

Out & About in the 757: Spa on the Boulevard

Groupon.com has done me right again!  I snagged a deal for a spa pedicure and Shellac manicure for only $35 at a relatively new spa called Spa on the Boulevard.  Located on Virginia Beach Blvd in Virginia Beach (near Lynnhaven Rd), this small spa packs a huge punch with its serene decor and friendly service.  Shame on me for being a tad bit late, but Katie hurried me right in to get my pedi started.  Small talk about family and work life made the time fly by.

Somehow Katie talked me right out of my comfort zone of color, and right into a bright hot fushchia pink that perfect for sunny weather and my sun-kissed skin tone.  What can I say, she was right! SCORE!

I’m amazed by the Shellac polish.  The pros: lasts up to 14 days without chipping, keeps the “shiny” look, does no damage to your natural nails, goes on just like regular nail polish, no drying time at all.  The con: you do have to remove with pure acetone.  But I must say that I truly enjoyed the one-on-one service that I got from Katie.  I didn’t have to say “you missed this” or “ouch, that hurt” or anything.  She truly took her time and ensured that her work was done to the utmost quality, often asking for my feedback to be certain I was happy with what she was doing.  And she shared that they will soon have Gelish shellac polish in soon, which has more variety of colors to choose from.  I’ll be back!

For more information on Spa on the Boulevard or to make an appointment, check out their website www.spaontheboulevard.  Be sure to ask for Katie!
