Out & About in the 757 – Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival starring Ledisi

My parents asked us to join them last night for the Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival starring Ledisi, along with Maya Azucena.  The festival was being held in downtown Newport News, VA at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center.  What you may not know about Ella Fitzgerald, is that she was born in Newport News, VA.  So it was only right that the Downing-Gross center named the theater located on the 2nd floor of the facility after the famed singer.

Maya Azucena is someone I had never heard of before, but definitely want to hear more of now.  She rocked the crowd with her raw soul music and just raw talent.

Ledisi…what can I say about Ledisi.  If you don’t know who Ledisi is, you are truly missing out on one of the most powerful voices in music right now.  Her fusion of R&B, Jazz, Gospel, Funk and whatever else she wants to do makes her show entertaining and energetic.  She is my vocal idol!

If you aren’t familiar with this center, check out their website at www.downing-gross.org for upcoming concert events.  Take 6 and SWV will be their during the center’s 3rd Annual Black Music Month Festival, June 3-4.  Tickets are $25 each for each show, or you can get tickets to both shows for $40.

Out & About in the 757 – The Palace on Plume

Looking for a “grown and sexy” spot to get your party on?  Well, I’ve got the place for you.

The Palace on Plume is one of the newest, yet most popular lounges in the 757.  Located in Downtown Norfolk, this is the go-to spot if you want to have a great evening without the riff-raff you might typically expect at a night club.  But buyer beware – this upscale lounge comes with an upscale cover charge as well.  All and all, it was worth the money to guarantee a great atmosphere for late-night fun.

Out & About – NoLyeJustCurls Natural Hair Meetup

Congratulations to NoLyeJustCurls on YouTube on a great natural hair meetup on April 23.

We all met up at BD’s Mongolian Grill at the Peninsula Town Center in Hampton, VA.  We ate, we talked hair, we had a product swap – well, sorta.  Let me explain: only one product was swapped, the others were left behind and I ended up with 2 barely used items – Jane Carter’s Leave-in Conditioner and SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie.  Needless to say, that made it all worthwhile!  Courtney also had a couple of giveaways for attendees, and hand-wrote thank you cards for us (I thought that was super sweet).

Out & About in the 757 – Divas & Decadence Fundraiser

Who says you can’t indulge in extravagance and give to charity at the same time?  Apryl Roberts of Memorable Events by Apryl accomplished this at her “Divas & Decadence” Fundraiser on April 23 at the Lynnhaven Colony Center in Virginia Beach, VA.  This event was designed for female tastemakers – trendy, fashion forward women who have an eye for rich style.  Proceeds from the event went to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

During the event, we were pampered with a makeup bar, massage station and onsite photographer along with wine, hors d’oeuvres, and cupcakes just to name a few of the amenities – all at no cost.  There were also vendors on site for some well-deserved retail therapy!

I truly enjoyed myself and look forward to the next event that Apryl hosts.  For more information about Memorable Events by Apryl, email her at info@memorableeventsbyapryl.com or call 888-542-1333.
